Feuerwerk 3 caters for the the more mature secondary school student or young adult. The cartoon stories have been replaced with photo-stories based on the everyday lives of young people from the Ostsee-Gymnasium in the picturesque Baltic seaside resort of Timmendorfer Strand, situated in the state of Schleswig-Holstein in the north of Germany. The photo-stories present these young Germans in a variety of situations: at school; on the beach; shopping for a Mother's Day present; running in a Volkslauf; preparing for a party; celebrating an 18th birthday; getting a driver's licence; at an amusement park, learning how to paddle a canoe and on Klassenfahrt in Denmark. Topic areas include: leisure; work; family and friends; adolescence; the environment; technology; future plans. Cultural units provide additional background information on the following: Norddeutschland; Steinhuder Meer; Plattdeutsch; Hansestadte; der Rattenfanger von Hameln; die Schweiz. Students will be working with a greater variety of authentic texts related to the topics presented in each unit, e.g. newspaper and magazine articles, poems, short stories, a play script and songs. Feuerwerk 3 contains challenging listening, speaking, reading and writing activities involving some new text types and tasks designed to draw on and extend students' increasing linguistic competence and cultural knowledge. Suggestions for incorporating information technology are included where appropriate. By the end of Feuerwerk 3 students will be well placed to pursue their German studies at a senior level.
