Résumé du livre

"This book challenges the doctrine that the only acceptable pictorial language in advertising is documentary. It does not impugn photography as such--which would be unforgivable and stupid--but rather the attitude of the graphic designer who, in each and every case, obstinately confines himself to the products of the camera lens. For, by so doing he deprives himself of many of those possibilities which, now as ever, any lively-minded designer should review when considering how to tackle a problem. Today our ideas are being used at such a rate that we cannot afford the pretentiousness of artistic asceticism. The corollaries of this view are: the graphic designer must know how to draw, the graphic designer must also be a draughtsman. Hence this little book advocates an expansion of training in graphic design. Drawing must take a place in the curriculum side by side with the principles of constructible form, typography and photography both as a subject and a method. Free subjective form does not run counter to the primary function of advertising: on the contrary, it appeals to a different area of the beholder's mind, excites his sympathy and enlivens his responses to what is presented. Design is not merely organization but also and above all expression; it is with this idea that the author grapples in the present book."--back cover.
