Résumé du livre
"Number and the Nature of Mathematics" covers a short course in understanding whatmathematicians do when they do Mathematics. It is suitable for an advanced secondaryschool student or a beginning university student contemplating a career as a mathematician. The course is built around an axiomatic development of number systemsfrom the Natural Numbers through the Complex Numbers. It has many side excursions to give some insight into the nature of abstraction. The book includes an extended example that fits simple, but fundamental, insights into a solution of an elementary, but interesting, problem. This book is based on a transformative course the author took at Loyola University of Los Angeles in 1962.
