Field notes Vol. 439 documents Howard Samuel Irwin's botanical collecting in Brazil in 1971 on a New York Botanical Garden expedition, with co-collectors including R.M. Harley, G.L. Smith, J. Ramos, R. Souza and S.F. da Fonseca. Specimens were collected as part of the Planalto do Brasil project, with most locations in the cerrados of Distrito Federal, Goiás, Mato Grosso, and Minas Gerais. The notebook contains a list of specimen numbers 30803-32326, collected February 16-March 19, 1971. The list contains specimen number, number of sheets, description, and herbarium determination. Collection locations and dates are also noted. Many of Irwin's original field notes are located in Field notes Vol. 341.
