Handwritten transcription, made by Robert Ransom, Jr. (pages 1-5), of a letter dated January 24, 1854 from Colonel Daniel Chandler in Fort Conrad, New Mexico to Major W.A. Nichols in Albuquerque, New Mexico concerning orders to explore the territory in south-central New Mexico and additional notes of the findings made by the 1st Dragoons who were part of the exploration party. The letter provides details of the units deployed, their officers, and size. The letter is followed by notes dated December 26, 1853-January 13, 1854 (pages 5-14) containing observations made by Ransom after the events occurred "from rough memoranda taken while making this march and from memory"
