Résumé du livre
Hidden in Plain Sight describes the adaptation of the familiar urban row house into a structure appropriate to a community of freestanding suburban homes. The row house as side by side attached urban dwellings was transformed into Evanston's double house, able to be built on a single building lot and often designed to look like a single large home. Disguised as single-family houses, many of Evanston's double houses blend almost seamlessly into the fabric of Victorian, Queen Anne, Shingle Style, and even Prairie Style houses built between the 1890s and just after the turn of the century. The book features essays describing forty of Evanston's double houses dating from 1882 to 2023 along with a catalogue displaying twenty-six related houses.
