Although everyone thought the Merrivale marriage was perfect, the whole town buzzed when Mrs. Merrivale announced she was going to join the WAC. Only her husband really knew how empty their marriage had become. But Edith quickly learned that becoming a WAC was not an escape into a glamorous world. It was a change into a world of great responsibility and hard work. And while her country needed her, the WAC demanded what amounted to a divorce from her husband and children, who also needed her. In the end, she found that she needed them, as well.
