Eight hand-written letters written to J. Grey Jewell, plus one typescript of one of the hand-written letters, from, among others, William Tecumseh Sherman. Another letter with several signatories recommends Jewell for the position of U.S. Postmaster General. Collection also includes a document permitting Jewell to "pass over any bridge or ferry to Virginia" through the end of March, dated March 21, 1862, and signed by the Aide-de-Camp of A. Porter, Brig. Gen. U.S.A., Provost Marshall. Jewell was a major in the U.S. Army from Mississippi during the Civil War and later served as Consul to Singapore
