Résumé du livre

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among reading, mathematics, and language achievement, intelligence, and musical aptitude. The study also attempted to find a weighted combination of variables which would accurately predict the results of a standardized musical aptitude test. The subjects of the study were administered tests of achievement, intelligence, and musical aptitude. The data gathered from these tests were correlated to determine the relationships between the variables, and a multiple regression was used to determine what weighted combination of variables would most accurately predict the outcome of the musical aptitude test. The analysis of the data indicated statistically significant relationships among the predictor variables and composite and rhythmic scores of musical aptitude. Some combinations of variables were found to be statistically significant in predicting the results of the musical aptitude test; however, intelligence test scores accounted for the greatest amount of variance in predicting musical aptitude. The results support the concept that measures of intelligence and achievement are indicators of different mental processes than measures of musical aptitude.
