Modern medicine in China had its beginnings in Guangzhou from the medical missionaries who went there starting in the 1830's. While modern medical schools begun by these missionaries later flourished in other Chinese cities, Guangzhou struggled to keep their schools. The thesis examines the reasons for the repeated failures of some of the colleges.
