Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) was a poet and novelist whose work is informed by a sense of wonder at the beauty of the world, by a love for the way of life still preserved in the Dorset villages of his youth, and by a deep compassion for the fate of human beings in a universe that is indifferent to them. In this 1951 study, R. A. Scott-James explores the life and work of Hardy. This edition includes a 1965 essay by Poet Laureate C. Day Lewis which attends to Hardy's lyrical poetry.
