The present work was carried out at the IRRI, Philippines, with inputs of the Netherlands Ministry of International Cooperation (DGIS) The Hague, The Netherlands, the Dept. of Plant Breeding, Wageningen Agricultural University. A detailed study of various aspects of PR was made so that more efficient breeding technology for identifying and accumulating PR might be developed. It focused on tropical lowland rice cultivars because these can be easily grown at IRRI and because stable virulent isolates to these cultivars were available for the study of PR.
