A reference method for measuring the toxicity of samples of whole sediment under controlled and defined laboratory conditions is described in this report. It uses luminescent bacteria (Vibrio fischeri) as the test organism and inhibition of light production by the bacteria in a solid-phase test as the biological endpoint.
