Six species of Balistidae occur in the eastern Pacific: Balistes polylepis, Pseudobalistes naufragium, Sufflamen verres, Melichthys niger, Xanthichthys mento, and Canthidermis maculatus. These are described and illustrated. The known ranges and general habitats are given for each. Keys are presented to facilitate identification of juveniles and adults. Relationships of these species with balistids from other areas are discussed.
