Résumé du livre

An Omnibus of Dime Novels from the Nineteenth Century.

Once avidly devoured by youth across the States, these short novels are home to one of the greatest heroes in American literature, though his thrilling exploits are now sadly largely lost to time. Once upon a time, the adventures of Deadwood Dick, outlaw and Prince of the Road, were read by millions of boys, who awaited his next adventure hungrily.

Originally published as weekly dime novels, these short novels are now being republished in a series of volumes, each containing 4 works by Edward L. Wheeler. Now, starting with this volume onwards, Wheeler's later novels are presented, many of which have never been republished since their first appearance in the 1880's. The eponymous hero makes an appearance in at least one story in each of these continuing volumes, though quite a few star other characters.

This Volume, the 18th in the series, contains the dime novels:

Kangaroo Kit's Racket; Or, The Pride of Played-Out.
Kangaroo Kit finds himself visiting the mining camp of Played-Out, where he falls for a local beauty. He must contend with rivals for her love, however, and she is at the heart of a villainous plot that is somehow linked to his own past.

Manhattan Mike, The Bowery Blood; Or, "Working-Up!" A Difficult Case.
When Detective Mike Maverick rejects Peleg Prancer's job offer to search for his runaway daughter, he suspects foul play and soon finds himself involved in a deadly game of blackmail, kidnapping, old rivalries, and competition from a corrupt rival investigator.

Deadwood Dick's Ducats; Or, Rainy Days in the Diggings.
Deadwood Dick lies mortally wounded near the miner's camp of Devil's Diggings, the victim of an assassin's bullet. With his dying breath the Prince of the Road tells Roaring Ruth and her pard, Dutch Dave, of a rich cache of gold hidden nearby, offering the riches as a reward to them if they will find his killer. Thus begins the search for a murderer among a rich cast of villains and heroes, all with their own secrets, and all searching for Deadwood Dick's Ducats.

First-Class Fred, The Gent From Gopher; Or, The Deadly Drop of Brimstone Bar.
Jackson Chambers has come to the mining camp of Brimstone Bar in search of a runaway betrothed, but his true motives are suspect. Meanwhile, Chambers' daughter, Cherry, is secretly trysting with her childhood friend, Booth Barron, who is accused of killing her brother. It is left to First-Class Fred to sort out the villains from the victims in this story, and to solve the secret of the mysterious killer known as the Deadly Drop, who is shooting evil-doers in the camp.
