"With one exception the sermons in this volume have been preached since the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. That exception, “Loyalty, the Basic Condition of Liberty,” was preached on the Sunday morning of that fateful day. All these sermons, therefore, have this present war as their background; and they have been selected because, in one way or another, they deal with the problems, personal and public, that the war presents. Now that the volume is ready for the press, I see that many things needing to be said about Christianity in wartime these particular sermons do not include, but, for what they may be worth, I offer to my friends these twenty-five Sunday morning messages, presented in the Riverside Church, New York, during the momentous months since America’s military participation in World War II began. In necessarily abbreviated form the substance of these sermons has been presented over the Blue Network to the radio audience, and alike for the cordial response of that unseen congregation and for the loyal support of my ministry by the church I serve, I am endlessly grateful.
