Pondering the Mark of the Beast

The book of Revelation's infamous "mark of the beast," the number 666, is familiar to believers and unbelievers alike and has been said to have been or will yet be many things, people, or institutions.
Is it a supercomputer? an imbedded microchip? a tattoo? the social security number? or is it in the form of a national ID card? What if its essence is or has been present in all these things yet is none of these things singularly? What if it is not an enforced or controlled mark of any kind? What if it is simply and only the intellectual event of personal decision?
