Sleigh had led a series of discussions asserting the truth of Christianity and divine revelation. Those addressed in this letter had written something that Offen "recently observed in the papers, your names attached" (cf. prelims.) in support of the adequacy of Sleigh's arguments. Offen and Bacheler refute those views in this letter, pointing out what they consider to be many weaknesses in Sleigh's presentation.
