Résumé du livre
The book starts with a business man coming home to find his wife murdered in their home. He is distraught and sells the business and leaves to find a school where he can take an advanced degree. He settles on Michigan and takes a PhD in Physics. He invents a nuclear automobile and sells it to the three big automotive companies in America and shares the profit with his class and the school.
He becomes interested in the increasing number of earthquakes and volcanic explosions and the number of people killed in them. So he starts a study group to find a way to predict disasters and warn people to leave when one is imminent. This becomes a major job and the University chooses him to be the first Chairman of the new Department. They find a way to predict earthquakes, and revel in their success. A freak wind comes out of the North and devastates several cities. They determine that a nuclear blast over Wyoming might divert the wind to the mountains and desert, thus saving major cities in its path.
Later the earth starts shaking and wobbling as it starts to leave its orbital path around the sun. Another nuclear blast brings it back into its orbit and all is well. But it soon seems that all is not well and a further study reveals another major problem that threatens the entire life forms on Earth.
