Most species have small flowers which are unusually complex, even for orchids. The genus is divisible into two groups based on lip morphology; those with a three-parted lip are very poorly known. The relatively massive callus, usually located at the base of the lip, is characteristic of the genus and supplies a great deal of taxonomically useful information. Within this callus is the elaiophore which secretes lipids as an attractant to pollinators. The details of elaiophore morphology match closely the
