The name of Richard Newton, Jr. (1874-1951), artist, gentleman, master of foxhounds, and a familiar figure in the society of his era, has long since fallen into undeserved obscurity. Little has been written about him, and those that knew him have in their turn passed from this earth. His works have been dispersed and largely forgotten, some destroyed and others lost. The portraits and hunting scenes he produced over the course of several decades depict some of the most prominent individuals and famous horses of the early 20th century, and landscapes now irreversibly altered. Taken as a whole, they represent an invaluable document of a time and a social milieu that is rapidly disappearing from living memory.
