Peter Shiras (1734-1825) was born at Peterhead, Scotland, the son of Alexander and Margaret Stuary Shiras. He immigrated to America in 1765 and settled at Mount Holly, New Jersey. His great grandson, George Shiras (1832-1924), was born at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of George and Eliza Herron Shiras. His family moved to a farm in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, in 1837. He attended the Ohio University for two years and then transferred to Yale, where he received a B.A. and law degree. He practiced law at Dubuque, Iowa, 1856-1858. He married Lillie Kennedy at Pittsburg in 1857. They moved to Pittsburg in 1858, where their two sons were born, 1859-1860. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1881 and appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1892. He retired in 1903. He died at the home of his son.
