Pp. 17-35 contain memoirs of Elie Jaffé, as told to Benbassat-Benby in Istanbul in April 1945. Jaffé, an Italian Jewish citizen, was born in Çanakkale, Turkey, in 1895. The memoirs recount his internment in Bergen-Belsen between May 1944-March 1945. He and his wife were arrested by the Gestapo in Milano, after their seven-year-old son was smuggled out to Switzerland. At Bergen-Belsen, Jaffé was transferred to the zone for "priviliged" Jews, i.e. citizens of neutral countries. His fellow prisoners were mainly Spanish and Portuguese Jews from Salonika and Athens. Pp. 37-38 present the names of survivors from Bergen-Belsen from these groups. In March 1945 Jaffé was released and sent to Sweden; in April he was repatriated to Turkey. He was later reunited with his son.
