Born in 1794, Ball was schooled at home by his mother until he left the family farm in Hebron, New Hampshire for Dartmouth College. In 1831, Ball embarked on his greatest adventure, joining Nathaniel Wyeth's party bound for the Pacific Northwest over the Oregon Trail. He settled in Grand Rapids Michigan where he helped to organized the Grand Rapids Public School, was one of the founders of the Public Museum, and bequethed to the city the 40 acres that became the John Ball Park and Zoo
