Leonard Maltin called Daniel Petrie, Jr.'s story "Sassy and sexy" and the script was nominated in 1988 for the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Allan Poe Award. The protagonist of this highly original New Orleans crime story is a stylish homicide detective (played in the film by Dennis Quaid) who runs afoul of the new, uptight assistant D. A. (Ellen Barkin) while investigating a local mob murder. Soon the two are romantically involved, even while they're at odds professionally. The story line later became a cable TV series.
