In 1975 John Tingley left the University of Oregon School of Architecture after four years in college to plan and save for a journey to Somewhere and Back Again. His original destination was 34.5553 North Latitude and 69.2075 East Longitude, a town on the Silk Route and a place far from the world in which he grew up. Between January and July of 1977, John traveled through Europe and the Middle East by train, plane, boat and bus. It was both an architectural and cultural pilgrimage. It was an adventure into the unknown. Cities visited were Antwerp, Amsterdam, Istanbul, Athens, Jerusalem, Munich, Rome, Florence, Paris, Barcelona, Zurich, and many places in between. In 2021 John started writing about his journey and adventures, using a badly damaged journal, seven hundred color slides and his memories. This is the story.
