A member of the Australian Imperial Force, Jack enlisted at Kensington, NSW as a Private, No. 251, No. 1 Coy. Divisional Train as a driver. On 22nd September 1914, on board the "S.S. Hymittus" Jack embarked from Sydney enroute to Alexandria, Egypt, where he would be assigned to battle. The trip took nearly three months and the letters trace this journey and his subsequent postings to the major theatres of war, Gallipoli, France, Belgium and England during the duration of the conflict.
