The collection comprises material that records the early civilian life and naval career of William James Hughan, who served in the Royal Australian Navy as a Gunner during the Second World War including on HMAS Sydney (II). The collection includes correspondence, certificates of service, sketchbooks, pen and ink studies, photographs, printed ephemera, books, a wooden sea chest and naval realia. Highlights include the Admiralty Manual: Turret Gun Drill for 6-inch B.L. Guns, Mark XXIII on Twin, Mark XXI Mounting, 1933 classified "For Official Use Only" and with ink-stamp of HMAS Sydney on the front cover; cloth badges; an anti-flash hood and a large format photograph showing the entire crew of the Sydney assembled on deck and in the rigging taken shortly after the sinking of the Italian light cruiser Bartolomeo.
