Zak Brady is a football-mad teenager who is an only child. He sometimes feels alone in the house, even with his mum and dad at home. Thankfully, his best friend since childhood, Lee o' Brien, is always on hand to play football outside and inside on Zak's computer. Zak longs to have another sibling, preferably a brother. Both boys attend Mount Moriar College and play on the school team. Zak is a gifted player, but in recent games, he has struggled to find his best form. Zak starts to hear voices when he's on the pitch and is amazed when the voice tells him exactly where to be, he seems to be always in the right place at the right time. Zak soon learns that a boy with auburn hair is cheering him on from the sidelines and is also helping him to succeed. The coach's daughter Sarah Jessica is on Zak's mind night and day; he is smitten with her and has fallen for her in a big way, Zak finally plucks up the courage to ask her out on a date after weeks and months of trying. The cup final is also on Zak's mind, and he is trying to juggle this along with school and now a romance. Zak visits the library and investigates this mystery boy. he discovers that the boy's name is Jack O'Leary and he has been dead for the past 60 years. A ghost and he is talking to Zak. Zack's life is turned upside down when he learns that Sarah Jessica is rushed to hospital, and worse was to follow when he hears that the love of his young life has leukaemia. He loses interest in football, school and life in general. He was getting very, very close to Sarah Jessica, but his life is unravelling before his eyes, and he feels so helpless. A few months pass, and Zak hears the news that he had been hoping and praying for. Sarah Jessica has made a miraculous recovery, and hearing this great news, Zak rushes to her to be at her bedside.
