This four-volume set provides detailed geographical and bibliographical information on 1000 20th-century authors who are most often studied in college and high school - from Virginia Woolf to Alice Walker, J.R.R. Tolkien to Henry Miller, and Isaac Asimov to Jack Kerouac. Approximately 70 per cent of the writers featured are novelists, poets and playwrights. The remaining sketches cover nonfiction writers, journalists and others best known for their work in other fields.
