The autobiography of Geoffrey Baylis, botanist and emeritus professor of Otago University. Geoff Baylis recalls his childhood in Campbells Bay (North Shore City) and his school days at Campbells Bay Primary School and Takapuna Grammar School. He describes his experiences as a botany student at Auckland University College in the 1930s and recalls the excursions he took with Field Club, for which he acted as Secretary. After gaining his PhD at Imperial College, London (1938) and a period of employment with the DSIR, Geoff served in with the Royal New Zealand Navy Volunteer Reserve (RNZNVR) during World War Two, achieving the final rank of Lieutenant. He describes his memories of England during the War and his experiences with the HMS Ganges, HMS St Vincent, and HMS Crocus.
