At birth, Stéphen Rivesanges took in the daughter of a gypsy woman who was dying and the Duke of Florès. The duke married a duchess and abandoned the beautiful gypsy. Stéphen shares this guardianship with a young widow, Anicée de Saule, who tenderly raises the little girl. The guardians love each other but end up separating.
