Diary kept by Signaller Charles William Arthur Johnston of the 41st Battalion during World War I. The diary covers the period December 1916 to August 1919. It includes his embarkation from Sydney on the troopship Demosthenes via Durban and Cape Town in South Africa; training in England at Larkhill and Sutton Veny camps on the Salisbury Plain; service in France and Belgium with the 41st Battalion culminating in the breaking of the Hindenburg Line in September and October 1918; a list of the main battles fought by the 41st Battalion on the Amiens front; a description of the march of the Dominion troops through London on 3rd May 1919; and the voyage back to Australia in mid 1919. The diary also contains notes written after the war, including a list of the number of casualties of the 41st Battalion; a transcript of a newspaper article from the Cape Town newspaper The Argus about the collision in dense fog at Cape Agulhas, South Africa, of the troopship Themistocles and the sailing vessel Eddisyde; and a brief account of the second phase of the Battle of Amiens.
