Concerning Herbert's effort to preserve the New Forest; saying "Thank you much for your letter. The memorial is being signed by strangers to the forest simply on the ground of preserving a few last bits of natural forest in their wild state. We local people should never have influence enough to save these fragments, if you did not help us from the outside. Our strength lies in your all answering our appeal. I hope you may think it right to sign. I thought it best to leave it open to whom it should be presented."
