The current nurse shortage is impacting healthcare. There need to be sufficient numbers of nurse faculty in order to increase numbers of nurses. Over 18,000 more nurse faculty positions will be needed in the year 2020. With the average age of current nurse faculty at 52, anticipated retirements will also reduce the job force. This study has described the career pathway of current nurse faculty, identified intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influenced them to purse a faculty position, and what influenced nurses to choose a faculty role over other advanced practice nursing roles.
