Here is a new and original voice. Meditating on the mystery of the Visitation and on Mary's Canticle, Elizabeth Ruth Obbard speaks of life as both journey and song. She draws especially on the examples of biblical women and emphasizes the feminine aspects of the soul's approach to God as illustrated in Scripture and in the writings of Julian of Norwich and John of the Cross. As with Mary, our own growth in the Lord is a continuous journey from the present to an unknown future -- from where we are to what we can become. The song which is each person's life is thus gradually fashioned from the stuff of daily living until it becomes one with Mary's own : "My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior."
