Correspondence from Spencer Fullerton Baird to John Torrey, dated 1851-1860, primarily discussing the minutiae of the production and publication of the numerous survey reports being generated by government expeditions during that period, particularly the United States North Pacific Exploring Expedition, as well as expeditions to survey the Northwest boundary and the boundary between the U.S. and Mexico. As Torrey wrote several of the botanical sections of those reports, Baird is in frequent contact with him regarding shipments of specimens, manuscript delivery and proofing, and the production of the accompanying plates. Baird also keeps Torrey up to date on internal Smithsonian Institution activities and gossip.
