Résumé du livre

Odenheimer's friendship with his teacher and colleague, Maryland Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham, is reflected in these discursive letters, chiefly to Bishop Whittingham. Many activities and issues of the Episcopal Church are touched upon, as well as personal matters such as Odenheimer's writings, reading, travel, views on music, requests for advice, and family affairs. About half the correspondence concerns Odenheimer's years as rector of St. Peter's Church, Philadelphia, 1841-1859, and deals with parochial events, affairs of the Diocese of Pennsylvania; the troubles of Bishop Henry U. Onderdonk; Low Church and High Church controversies; the periodical The True Catholic, 1843-1846, opposition to the Roman Catholic Church, and similar subjects. Other papers pertain to Odenheimer's episcopate, 1859-1875, affairs of the Church in New Jersey, Civil War prayers, drafting of clergymen for military duty, support for the Freedmans' Commission, episcopal services performed by Odenheimer in Maryland, 1867, and the Liturgy of St. James.
