Gabriel Orsenna, born in 1883, works for a rubber factory that leads him to Brazil, then during the Second World War, in Paris. He is in love with two British women. During the fifties, he witnessed the collapse of the French colonial empire. Gabriel's father, Louis, is a bookseller and sells atlases and colonial guides. He is passionate about this French empire and transmits this passion to his son. The point of view of the two men intersects.
