William Powrie, George Dalgleish, John Hay, and John Hepburn were accused of the murder of Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, the second husband of Mary I of Scotland. James Hepburn, the 4th Earl of Bothwell, was tried separately and is not considered here. Other trials considered include that of Sir Thomas Wyatt [Wiat] for treason against Mary I, Queen of England, and the execution of Sir Walter Raleigh.
