Résumé du livre

Chiefly letters received by Brown while a tutor at Dartmouth College, 1806-1808. The correspondents include Brown's sister, Prudence Brown, as well as a number of Dartmouth graduates, among them William Hayes, George Shattuck, and Samuel McGregore Burnside. The letters from friends reflect the development of Brown's early professional life as a teacher and minister, the controversy between Dartmouth President John Wheelock and Hanover church members, and religious viewpoints. Of interest is one letter by Hayes indicating the increasing notoriety of Daniel Webster. A few letters relate to churches in North Yarmouth and Gorham, District of Maine, as well as Woodstock, VT. Includes the letter from the Dartmouth College trustees, in which they ask Brown to take the presidency. There is a lacuna in the correspondence between 1810 and 1815.
