A series of letters by Joseph P. Thompson, minister of the Broadway Tabernacle Church, addressed to his congregation, recording observations made in the course of his travels in Egypt in 1853, and printed in The independent (New York, N.Y.), of which he was an editor. In addition to topographical and archeological descriptions, Thompson also devotes about half the letters to an account of the Copts, and discusses the possibility of Christian evangelization of the Muslim population. Portions of this text were incorporated into the author's Photographic views of Egypt past and present (1854).
