Oueijan (English, Notre Dame U., formerly Lebanese U.) traces the germination and development of Islam in English literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the end of the 19th century. He finds that prejudiced and distorted views of Middle Eastern people and culture were projected throughout the 12 centuries, that religious and political leaders fostered the misrepresentations for their own interests, and that no independent scholars sought to correct the errors.
