The study sample of eight hundred eighty-nine respondents represented 67.5% of the total population and includes representation from hospitals 200-2263 beds in size located in all regions of the United States in the four ownership categories of federal and non-federal government, voluntary and church affiliated associations. Thirty percent of the participants held assistant administrator appointments with the remainder having department head positions. A total of one hundred twenty-seven different position titles were revealed. Fifty-seven percent of the respondents reported having a masters degree as highest formal education and seven participants held doctoral degrees. Three non-nurses were included. Thirty-seven percent of the directors had less than three years of top level nursing administration experience, and eighteen percent reported more than eighteen years of such experience. Included were forty-four men and eight hundred forty-three women.
