Résumé du livre

Theoretical calculations of the bremsstrahlung from atomic oxygen and nitrogen were carried out using a spherically symmetric potential including exchange and polarization forces. Preliminary estimates of the Maxwell average bremsstrahlung absorption cross sections were found to agree with Taylor's infrared measurements. Some unsatisfactory features of the used approximation and also a comparison of the results with other recent work are discussed. Experiments were performed to measure the photo emission edge in the 7800 - 8000 A wavelength region. Experiments were conducted on an electric arc driven shock tube on incident and reflected air shock waves to measure the continuum radiation emitted at wavelengths of 0.325, 0.51 and 6.1 microns and over a temperature range from 8000 K to 14,000 K. Experiments are also described which investigate the vacuum ultraviolet radiation emitted from air and constituent gases at elevated temperatures. (Author).
