Life represents a delicate balance between the hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of its constituent macromolecules. Biogenesis, early evolution, aging, and the deposition of biomaterial as petroleum are described in terms of changes in the water structure in the hydration sheaths of substances corresponding to a gradual transition from a hydrophilic to a hydrophobic character.
