Résumé du livre

This training workbook is an outgrowth of a research project entitled, 'Parents and Caregivers Perceptions of Storytelling as a Creative Intervention for Children of Incarcerated Parents.' The research was conducted between October 2018 and December 2019 with caregivers from predominantly, the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas. During our research, we sought to gain insights on how caregivers/parents carried out dyadic discussions regarding parental incarceration with children under 10 years of age. In this workbook, we consider caregivers to be parents, relatives, guardians, and others who provide care and are responsible for raising the child(ren) of the incarcerated parent. The Caregivers' Family Relations Assessment and Communication Strategies (C-FRACS) grounded theory was developed from empirical research findings that provide the foundation for this training curriculum. In this training, we share important considerations about how caregivers' communication occurs within the social context of a child with an imprisoned parent. Finally, drawing from the study, caregivers' epistemological knowledge, communication strategies, challenges, and with an integration of relevant literature, we developed a web-based portal of companion resources (audio-e-books) and 3 storybooks for training. Each book is a compilation of narratives shaped by key caregiver communication strategies. Theses strategies are integrated into child-friendly, age-appreciate storylines deemed essential to assist with parent-child discussions regarding parental absence due to incarceration. The supplemental resources are on the web portal: https:www.mystoryandme.com. The audience for Training. Training is designed for three audiences: (1) Helping professionals who work with caregivers and their children who have been affected by family member incarceration; (2) Caregivers (both non-incarcerated parents and justice aligned parents) who wish to understand how to better communicate with children under their care; and (3) Educators, Community Advocates and Volunteers who work with and assist families. Purpose. This guide is designed to help readers understand how tailored storybooks such as Baby Star Finds Happy, Truth and the Big Dinner, Jamie's Big Visit, and Rocko's Guitar can provide parents with tools to increase children's understanding about situations, concerns, and feelings related to the loss of a parent due to incarceration.
