Résumé du livre

The revision of the genus Salix which is presented here is based on field studies which attempt to understand the species in terms of the following: population variation, developmental variation, environmentally induced variation, ecological preferences, and modification as a result of hybridization and introgression, as well as on a study of herbarium specimens and the literature. The role that Salix species play in successional development on glacial moraine in southeastern Alaska, on glacial outwash plains in the Alaska Range, on river alluvium in central Alaska, and on gravel floodplains in arctic Alaska is discussed. Their success as colonizers is based on their growth forms and on their reproductive, evolutionary, and ecological characteristics. (Author).
