In American history, the abolitionists were a large number of people who became influential during the first half of the nineteenth century in urging the immediate abolition of slavery. The importance of the movement dates from the beginning of the work of William Lloyd Garrison in 1829, and the formation of the American Anti-slavery Society in 1833. This volume chronicles the lives and contributions of six abolition luminaries: Sojourner Truth, John Brown, William Lloyd Garrison, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Tubman.
