Résumé du livre
"Joseph Jefferson was completely a man of the theater. His father and grandfather had been actors; several of his relatives by marriage were involved in the theatre; and two of his children became actors. He made his first stage appearance in 1833 at the age of four, and he took his last curtain in 1904, just one year before his death. Although primarily about the theatre, his book is also an account of America in his lifetime, for Jefferson toured the country in the years when the West was being settled, travelling in wagons and float boats, performing in haybarns and tents, and he reported on his experiences on those tours in detail. But himself was not, or at least did not remain, a provincial player. He took his art seriously and studied in England and France, observing the foremost actors of the day playing their best role"-Publisher
